Abstract This study examined the reinforcing value of social media based on its putative function using a hypothetical social media purchase task (SMPT). Mixed-effects modeling ( R 2 = .91) evaluated behavioral patterns among 328 university students. We found that function significantly affected consumption at minimal cost ( log 10 Q 0 ) but not price sensitivity ( log 10 α ). Social media accessed for escape, information, or automatic positive reinforcement generated greater demand than seeking likes/engagements. Individual Q 0 values showed moderate cross-condition correlations ( rs = .31–.49), while α values correlated strongly ( rs = .81–.95). The Social Media Use Disorder Scale interacted with function to predict Q 0 , whereas the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale predicted α independently of function. These findings reveal how different functional contexts affect demand parameters and suggest attention-seeking motivation may confer vulnerability to problematic use, while individual differences in addiction severity modulate price sensitivity across functional domains.
Abstract Although researchers typically rely on visual analysis to draw conclusions about functional relations in single-case designs, a growing collection of statistical methods have been proposed to augment visual assessment. With the introduction of increasingly complex statistical models, single-case researchers need stategies for evaluating their plausibility and utility. One potentially useful method for such model assessment is Bayesian posterior predictive checking (PPC), which involves simulating artificial data based on an estimated model and comparing the features of the simulated data to features of actual data. We provide a non-technical introduction to the use of PPCs for assessing the plausibility of statistical models for SCD data. We propose that PPCs should focus on data features that are of central interest in visual analysis. We demonstrate how PPCs can be represented in graphical form. We illustrate use of PPCs by re-analyzing data from two previously conducted studies: an across-participant multiple-baseline design assessing an oral reading fluency intervention and a reversal design investigating the effects of a group contingency intervention on inappropriate verbalizations.

ABSTRACT For justice‐involved youth (JIY) in residential facilities, a variety of daily interactions may give rise to distressing internal stimuli. In turn, these internal stimulus conditions often lead to chronic states of distress, contributing to increased challenging behavior, negative affect, or both, worsening conditions of confinement. Although a variety of evidence‐based interventions exist for JIY, the extent to which these interventions allow youth to take an active role in making treatment decisions is varied and limited. In addition, a relative paucity of research exists on the feasibility of cognitive defusion with JIY. The present study sought to determine if defusion is an effective intervention to decrease self‐reported distress levels among JIY. Participants were invited to (a) develop an individualized subjective units of distress scale, (b) implement three defusion strategies in response to a script during individual sessions, and (c) provide feedback about the intervention process. Results were used to make recommendations to participants regarding effective and preferred strategies based on their feedback. Findings suggest defusion can be effectively implemented by behavior analysts in practice with JIY. Limitations of this application model and directions for future research are discussed.
Abstract Applied behavior analysis (ABA) continues to face a research-to-practice gap that limits uptake of evidence-based procedures in routine service settings. This article introduces a participatory action research collaborative (PARC) model that formalizes university–agency partnerships to build research infrastructure. PARC establishes shared governance through MOUs, ethical infrastructure, and co-production with practitioners and client/family advisors. We describe governance, workflow, and training procedures that effectively embed research into routine care by building capacity in research ethics, context assessment, and treatment integrity. We identify common barriers, such as time pressures, turnover, skill gaps, and ethical oversight, and outline feasible mitigation strategies, including protected time, incentives, role clarity, and standardized protocols. The PARC model proposes that ABA agencies are learning health systems that iteratively generate practice-based evidence, enhance social validity and cultural responsiveness, and sustain durable improvements in service delivery.
