Abstract Recent attacks on applied behavior analysis (ABA) by neurodiversity advocates share a common theme with opposition to other supports, such as subminimum wage vocational programs and congregate residential settings: the intact mind assumption, which maintains that even profoundly autistic people have typical intelligence, even if they present as severely cognitively impaired. This article examines the history of the intact mind assumption, which was largely shaped by psychoanalytic theory in the mid-20 th century, as well as its impact on contemporary disability policy and practice.

Abstract Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBA®s) must acquire 32 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years. One way BCBAs obtain CEUs is by attending their state chapter conferences, which feature keynote speakers and invited speakers who disseminate information in their respective areas of presumed scientific expertise. This study evaluated 735 CEU presentations provided by keynote and invited speakers at state conferences in the United States for 2021, 2022, and 2023. For each keynote and invited presentation, researchers used Google Scholar to count the speakers’ (a) peer-reviewed publications on their presentation topic and (b) total peer-reviewed publications. In part, the results across all three years indicate that 31% of speakers had zero topic-specific publications. Notably, the percentage of speakers with zero topic-specific publications concerningly increased across the three years. Results also indicate nearly 40% of speakers with zero topic-specific publications did not have any peer-reviewed publications. We discuss the potential implications of the findings and suggest actions for offsetting the current trend.
The current study is the first to examine whether the positive effects of the School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) model, previously documented as effective in the school context, may generalize to the home context. Potential benefits for children and parents were investigated longitudinally. A randomly selected subsample of Norwegian students drawn from a larger dataset and considered at respectively low, moderate, and high risk of developing conduct problems was rated by their parents at five time points across four successive school years. Only the fourth graders were included in the analyses to follow a stable group of students over time. Data were analyzed using linear mixed models. The outcome variables examined were parent-rated problem behavior and social skills, monitoring, mental health, support to the child’s schooling, and school–home cooperation. The analyses revealed no significant benefits of SWPBIS in the home context, neither for the children nor the parents. Likewise, no differential effects for low-, moderate-, and high-risk groups were detected. To increase the odds of cross-domain effects of the SWPBIS model, the inclusion of additional intervention components to better inform, include, and support parents should be considered, particularly for parents of students with more severe behavior problems.

Abstract Pica includes the persistent ingestion of nonnutritive, nonfood items at a level that is inappropriate given the individual's developmental level and cultural or religious practices. Behavioral treatments involve a variety of components to target the motivating operations that evoke pica, disrupt its occurrence, and reinforce adaptive alternatives; they have been characterized as well established and empirically supported. However, the literature consists of mostly small‐ n studies, limiting analysis of the general and comparative efficacy of different treatment components. The current study describes outcomes from two different sites for 33 consecutively encountered cases for whom a behavioral treatment for pica was evaluated. The final treatment reduced pica by at least 90% for 30 participants. Positive outcomes were maintained when treatment was extended to novel implementers, settings, and discard apparatuses for 26 of 29 participants. We examine the comparative efficacy of treatment components and discuss tactics used to safely assess and treat pica.
